Open your file manager and find the application you want to run. Drag and drop it to your desktop. Read the Gnome Help (the question mark icon) on the gnome foot icon on your panel for drag and drop.

The desktop icon for your floppy drive will mount your floppy. When you use mdir and mtools, you do not use the icon to mount your floppy.. Read mtools and just put the floppy in and give the mtool commands. You do not need to mount the floppy.
