Hello!

I am very happy with my new Redhat 9 box, except for one thing: I have
lost all my ALT-number keys which I use to display French characters.

Working on both French and English keyboards on a dozen different
Windows machines day in and day out, I even type my single quotes with
ALT-39 and backslashes with ALT-92 on the keypad with Num lock on.

I am desperately trying to figure out how to get my French accented
characters back.

Is there a way to do this? I used Redhat 7.3 before and it didn't have
this problem.

Hi,

I'm not very sure about this. But, you can try this:
kcmshell keyboard_layout

Play around with the options there.

Oh, I forgot to mention. The file "/usr/lib/kbd/keytables/dk.map" mentioned in the Danish HOWTO might be at "/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/dk.map.gz" these days.

The map you might want is at "/usr/share/keymaps/i386/azerty/fr.map.gz", atleast on my system. I think on RedHat 9, it's at "/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/azerty/fr.map.gz".

Right at the very end, there's a small snippet "Latin1 characters on an English keyboard". It'll do something like what you want.

I will check that out.

The web page editing is easy to work around by using HTML special characters (which also avaoids web pages from displaying incorrectly in the different encodings) but responding to email is sub-optimal. Skipping accents in an email reply looks like I rushed a response.

Some of the links would be helpful but specifically I have a laptop (no right-hand numeric pad). The idea of using the useless keys like CAPS-lock is appealing but I see the limited amount of letters. Also, I like to change Linux flavors from time to time (newbie, I want to learn from one system to another)... for instance if RedHat keeps its X info under /X11 and others under /XFree86 or something (I'm grossly simplifying) then I have to do different things each time...
What if I'm Not Using X??? And want to type Spanish in, say, vim or Emacs? I keep thinking there must be something that can be in command-mode terminals that is kinda universal, instead of having a different solution for each X KDE Gnome Bluecurve etc.
Quadmore were you running rh 7.3 on a desktop w/numeric pad or a laptop?
