ndiswrapper 'make' error. probably simple fix required

I have battled through this problem tremendously looking at endless google searches for an answer.

The error I receive is that I don't seem to have sources for my kernel; I should install them in /usr/src and put a link in /lib/modules/<version>/build

So... I downloaded my source...

used rpm -Uvh and now i have a link in my source directory called 'linux' which links to a folder just above /usr/src (/usr/src/linux-2.6.3-4mdk/

Then I went to /lib/modules/kernel2.6.3-4mdk

There was no 'build' directory

I added a build directory and put a link in it to the source

I still get the same error

My actions may seem stupid however I have only been using linux for two days in an effort to accelerate my learning of unix scripting for a university subject.

thanks

EDIT: I am thinking part of my problem is the build directory. ndiswrapper looks for a makefile in it. obviously my build directory is empty at the moment.
