mysql tables

I make a mistake to remove my tables of mysql.
I have rebuild the tables with the command 'mysql_install_db'
After that my socket is not working anymore. (socket is 0 bytes)
When I uninstall mysql en reinstall it the tables and are not changed.
The date I the directory ”var/lib/mysql” is not reinstalled because it’s a data dir. .
When I delete the directory var/lib/mysql, I think its updated when I install Mysql.
Is that correct ?.
Rudolf
