Unhappy My X just stopped working???

Hi,

I have a debian woody system installed with 2.2.20 kernel version. My XFree version is 4.2.1 and just today it suddenly stopped working. I think it had something to do with the fonts update I did yesterday. But I'm not sure.

Here is the log output. Thanks in advance!
BTW: my video card is S3 Virge PCI 325.

Your mouse settings are incorrect, did you change/remove/unplug the mouse? Did you switch to using DevFS? Does the mouse work in console (GPM)? It sais it cannot open /dev/mouse check the mouse device is symlinked to /dev/mouse and it exists. In any case something with the mouse is wrong. Check the core pointer section of /etc/X11/XF86Config to check if everything there is fine, in case you already checked all the other things that i mentioned.

HI NSKL!

Thanks for your reply. That seemed to solve it but know I'm getting another one. This is what it spitted out:

------------------------------
...
(II) Keyboard "Keyboard1" handled by legacy driver
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
------------------------------

What does this mean? I thought it was something to did with fonts because I updated something(can't remember) and it required font update. Have you any idea?

Thanks again mate.

Indy

Yeah, now its font problem.
It cannot find the default font (called fixed)
Make sure your fonts are installed correctly, make sure you know where they are installed, and then edit XF86Config to point it to the right fonts directory. I can not remember in what section of XF86Config file fonts are loaded, but i think its in "files section" Good luck

Hi NSKL!

Well I looked around a bit and found where the fonts are located and the paths are correctly set in my XF86Config. BUT I cant find a font called fixed so apperantly something bad has happened. How do I "reinstall" my fonts to 'default'. Is there a procedure (a sript or so) or do I have to put the fixed font manually. And where can I find this font???

Thanks again

Indy
(Sorry for not puuting out my config file but I'm under my terrible windows now and I forgot to copy over it to my fat partition)
