Modem woes in RH9

I just got a new modem and installed it. The guys at best buy said it would work with linux (all the computer guys there ran linux.. ) The one guy even said it was the one he used with RH9. Was going to get the external but the guy assured me it worked for him in RH 9 and was a good $30 cheaper.

This is a Blaster PCI modem, uses conexant chipset. When i booted RH, it gave me the little hardware config thing and recognized it as a Conexant HCF Modem (which it is)

It also shows up in the control panel hardware thing under "PCI" with all of the right info. However, when i go to run the internet config wizard and choose modem, it says it can't find one?

Is there something wrong? A way i can set it up manually? A way to find where it is or to query it to make sure it is working? As soon as i get this puppy going windows XP is getting another diet to 10 GB leaving the rest for linux.

I can't wait...

TIA, as always,

Nathan

ARRRGGG!

This is the first time Linux has let me down. Come to think of it, actually its the hardware manufacturers for not supporting.

I see no reason to pay $15 for the driver from linuxant.com when the free version doesn't work for me, still no modem detected by the internet setup, and what if i get a different distro or upgrade the kernel...

No, i think i'm better off getting the external for $20 more, only paying an extra $5 than the linuxant driver, and going that way.

Please disregard the previous question of this thread...

The other modem i saw at BB was also a ModemBlaster, it was an external with serial connection and said 'contoller based'. The modem compatability page at start.to only has one external ModemBlaster and it says it was fully compatible.

Am i to understand that pretty much all externals that are serial connection and controller based will be supported? So this one should be also then?

Going to return this damn thing tomorrow and get the external.

Thanks,

Nathan

PS, sorry for the rant, just been getting frustrated with this thing lately. Feel better now.
