Modem nightmare

Hi all,

I hope someone may have a brainwave on this one 'cos i'm scratching my head...

I am running RH 9.0 on a Tosh laptop 1410-303. I tried the Smartlink modem drivers for Linux, and had more success than I expected from a Software modem, they compiled OK and actually dial out!! However not correctly...

When a number dials it seems to stutter and you can audibly notice it making crunching noises and it often repeats digits. This usually ends up with an error tone or "This number has not been recognised " message from BT.

If I try short numbers, ie 1471 (in the UK this tells you who last called your number) it works fine.

I have tried including commas in the number to slow it down, but no joy.

I have tried looking for an init string which may slow the dial process down, but i've not found one.

It is worth noting that the modem works fine with Win XP with which I am dual booting.

Please help! Linux is spoiled with no online access...

Thanks
Gez
