ML 8.2 Nightmare!

My system hangs with no HDD activity just after the installation screen shows "calibrating delay loop..."

I have tried every command line switch (linux ide=no dma) etc,

My system is (although stripped down to just VGA, HDD and CDROM.

Abit KT7A Raid (Raid disabled)
Athlon 1333
Ati Radeon
IBM 60GXP 61.2GB
Yamaha 2100 CDRW
256Mb Ram

I have also experimented with various jumper settings on the HDD and Still no luck.

I'm a total newbie to LM so please Help!!
