Mint Cinnamon logout screen issues

Hi there! From absolute Newbie loving (Mint Cinnamon)
Have one small issue - when trying to log out from whisker menu, logout window with options (switch user, logout etc) appears but greyed out or sometimes does not appear on screen; button appears on bottom bar menu but in square brackets or red. Anyone else experienced that?

I use Mint Cinnamon (Debian Edition) and I'm not sure what you mean. First, where is the whisker menu? Can you post any images or describe this problem a bit more?

For the "greyed out" problem, if I remember correctly, ya need "policykit" installed.

Thank you, rtmistler... it doesn't happen every time, but next time it happens, I will try to take some screenshots (once I figure out how... does Mint have a similar app to Windows' Snipping Tool?)
Sorry, I am at work on my M$Windoze Pc, so I can't try it here...
By Whisker menu, I mean the little logo and menu in the bottom left-hand corner. In it, there is an option "logout", I chose that and usually get a window with three options: "switch user, log out and ens session (I think)".
Sometimes (often) the window does not appear, but the button for that window appears in the bottom taskbar with the name in [], if I click on it either nothing happens or it turns red and blinks, but no window appears. At that point, I just turn the machine off at the power...

Well if there's something wrong with the user interface, that is not ideal and is something to ultimately figure out. However to properly shut down the system, you can always open up a terminal window and type:
Code:
$ sudo poweroff
This should shut down the system cleanly, however it also may be different than your intentions, you may just wish to logoff.

CTRL-ALT-DEL should work to bring up a menu to allow you to lock the screen and also have the options to log out or power off the system.

Again not ideal, but possibly may help you to accomplish some of your intentions until you can figure out the problem with the menu.
