manual for .desktop files

Hi guys,

I would like to know how to create icons in linux for my programs (not soft links). I have seen this [program].desktop files and would like to learn how to do them.

Any pointers on where I can read about this?

Icons on the desktop depend on the Windowmanager. Please post, which WM you're using.
