Hi, I installed Mandrake 9.1 about a week ago and have been unable to use the internet. I've used drakconnect or whatever like 5 times and each time it's supposedly "successful" but any time I try and access a website it tells me it can't be found. This seems odd because I have also used Red Hat 9 and had no problems connecting to the internet. it was just bang, bang, you're connected to the internet!
You have a fresh install and bugs are updated as soon as they are discovered, so you have lots of updates to your installation that need to be applied, such as the bad configuration of the firewall.
Your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the internet (so much for newbie friendlieness, eh?).
Use the service manager in the Mandrake control center and disable the firewall. If you can't figure out how to do that, use the software manager and uninstall it. I believe it's called Shorewall.
Then you can use the software manager to update your install and choose something like GuardDog for a firewall if you want one.

i tried mdk 9.1 , had the same problems. in the control center make sure that your modem is detected in the hardware section, and then try to set up your connection and connect. that's the reason i got away from mdk even after you setup it seems you have to connect from the control center, too cumbersome.
under redhat and other american distros its not a problem, but these european distros are different, seems that the internet is something that they guard zealously. perhaps their setup as far as cost, etc. is different from the us.
i finally set it up but thought connecting was too much of a pain. shame its a nice distro other than that.
