Question Mandrake 10 and dri

Hi all

This weekend I updated to mandrake 10 and for the most part it went fine
then when I logged out to change users the system went blank and did not return
so I did some surfing and someone said disable "dri" witch worked just fine
now here is the problem now I lost 3d graphics cannot play tux or any 3d games
I have the following

ati rage128 video
392Mb ram
aopen ax45-v motherboard

with dri enabled it has 3d graphics and tux works fine but when you logoff you have to
power down and up with the reset button not even shutdown works it just hang

I am using ati xpert 99 drivers because winxp works with them
I also tride the ati128 drivers the same thing happend
I also downloaded the newest nvidia drivers but it wont install because it said my kernel-source was not installed but i made sure it was there so I am open to any advice
at this moment in time

besides that it works like a dream good work people
will always love linux

Thank you all

What version of XFree are you using? I recall an XFree bug in mdk9.1 for certain ati cards with just the symptoms you describe, i.e. hanging on shutdown, reboot, halt, respawning with dri enabled. You can tell what version you are using by running:

$ rpm -qa | grep XFree

The fix was to upgrade to XFree 4.3 which is what is used in mdk10.

You won't get 3d w/o dri enabled. Also, the nvidia driver is for nvidia based cards only so that won't be of any help.

I have also installed mandrake 10.0 on my laptop. My graphic card is the integrated kind. I think it is i830MG... anyway I have to disable dri on my X to make it able to run "glxinfo" and "glxgears"... Maybe you can enlighten us on that?

Erm you mention about the nvidia driver not installing. Why try and install it if you are using an ATI based card ?

Anyway, normally the nvidia driver won't install without the kernel sources. So you'd have to get the latest kernel sources and the matching kernel. Then download the nvidia driver and then run the script it then makes the correct kernel module for you. You then have to use the readme for the relevant changes to the /etc/X11/XF86config-4 files (the readme tell's you which lines to change/mod) and bingo - well in theory. You'd reboot/start and you'd have the nvidia splash screen.

regards

John

but I had more problems than just dri my cdrom did not work and I found out it was the LG that they were talking about so ,out went LG in came God no's What but it works for now
O and i got a 32mb ati agp card same one as before just this one has 32mb, as it is now 9.2 is working very, very, very well , did a few tweeks got my tv card to work , my camera and my palm 111e got cedega and played a few games (not a big Gamer sorry) like programming and animation more but it work fine Diablo 3 warcraft and so on
So there u have my story Will get to 10 in a month when everything calms down. then we will have to see what it does from there. I will be back with my problems until then , thanks for a great forum it is wonderful to see so many people that is not following the pack and is using something that demands brain power.

peace to all and long live LINUX
