Question Login screen fails to come on FC6 after using beryl as root

Hi! I am using FC6 [2.6.18-1.2798fc6xen]
every thing was working fine & i was using beryl on my regular account.
i installed it by using su - command.
Today i really logged into the root account & tried to use beryl but it refused to start & screen went blank
so i killed the X server using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
I was expecting the login screen but What happened was the cursor would come for 2 to 3 seconds & then blank.
This keeps on repeating for about 2 mins & i get a message :

'The display server has been shutdown 6 times in last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on.Waiting for 2 min before trying on display:0'

I waited for some time but the same thing repeats again & again.

then i shutdown the computer by using Ctrl+Alt+F1 i.e virtual terminal by /sbin/halt as root in the two min time.

on restarting the same thing happens. It starts just before the login screen should come.

also while shutting down i saw two services failed to stop "hpssd" & " xfs "
i don't know if it might be relevant

I have a fc6 bootable dvd with me if required but no one knowing linux who can help me.

So Please help me
Thanks in advance!

That sounds like your X is utterly trashed and it is more confirmation that you should not log in as root at all, especially when you are trying to run an experiment.

I recently tried to help someone with a similar problem and it seems that, no matter what we did, that person eventually had no choice but to do a fresh install.

Anyway, you could start by removing beryl from the command line: yum remove beryl*

If it's still not working, then clearly this issue has messed up your X server in some obscure way. In which case it had better be replaced - but as both gnome and kde depend on X , you would almost inevitably have to replace those as well.

I tried to start the x display server in the 2 min time by using ctrl+alt+F1 , then logging in as root & entering startx then i log in directly into gui as root but then there is no option but to log out to shell again. can i now do something to fix the problem.

But in 2 min time the flickering again starts & a message is displayed which says a display server is already running on disply:0 press no to retry or yes to continue.
