Login fails - being taken back to login screen

Hi there,

problem is:

my Mdk 9.2 (kernel 2.6.3-7) boots into graphical login (init 5), lets me enter userid & passwd, does something with the hdd, obviously restarts XServer and takes me back to the login screen.

Independent of the user (3 different users) i try, it's always the same.

Choosing Gnome instead of KDE also doesn't change anything.

Strg+Alt+F1-ing into console and checking some logs first told me, that loads of modules seem not to be found. Given the fact that I'm not really a noob but quite unexperienced, i draw my Mdk 10.0 Cds and did a system update to 10.0.

Straight after the first boot i was abled to login, though some KDE (3.2) apps looked a bit odd.

Logging out and in again sets me back to my problem before the update. Only significant difference: all the error msgs concerning the modules have gone and where replaced by ... nothing meaningful.

Maybe somebody could give me a hint where to check for useful logs or has had a similar problem. In a few hours I'll try it again and in case post some errors found.

Aggravating to that adds the fact, that i can't say what could*'ve caused this wierd behaviour. I experimentally did a "urpmi --auto --auto-select" but as far as i remember, it didn't do anything except listing lots of failed dependencies (did a "history" in console to see what i did last summer ... oh, the night before i meant ).

Thanx in advance,
donhare

Have you checked your XFree log for errors? Look for anything that says EE.

Fixed ... in a way, at least.

Hi,

i checked the XFree log again (thanks Mystified) and discovered a memory problem. after logging in and X trying to come up the fglrx module seems to overlap a reserved memory range in RAM, so therefore X crahes.

in single user mode i rmmod-ed fglrx (original ATI module) and urpme-ed the package. Reinstalling failed due to two package conflicts. So i booted once more with the Mdk 10 cds and configured the system to load the "onboard" fglrx module, which did perfectly and even identified the graphics card (Radeon 9800 Pro) correctly.

in short, the system boots into init 5 and X comes up smoothly again. Despite some other annoyances like e.g. a broken mysql-server, everything works fine.

Did you check to make sure that the user logging in is the owner of all files in their accounts?
This happen to me every time when I install a new system and forget to add the already existing users and then add the users afterwords.
