Loading 3D-card driver

Hello
Is there someway to detect what type of 3D-card you use, and then let the appropiat driver load?
In example:
When it detects you have a nvidia 3D-card it loads the nvidia driver instead of(in example) the ATI driver?
And where's the kernel module nvidia modprobe'd?
Thanx Hylke

Have you tried something like a livecd, like knoppix? Perhaps it will probe the correct driver? Worth a try at least. Maybe another thing you can do is open the computer and have a look inside to see if you can visually identify the card? Regarding the modprobing bit, I usually just specify the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf so I'm afraid I can't be of any help there.
