list computers in LAN

How can I list the names of all computers currently connected to a LAN (Windows and Unix machines)?

Depends on how your LAN is set-up? Or, in other words: there is
no generic way of doing this.

The only way I can think of would involve sequentially pinging all addresses (because using a broadcast ping doesn't *always* seem to work), and for the addresses which register positively, use another probe application to determine the hostname of that address. It shouldn't be a particularly complicated BASH script to do this.
