software to list local network computers?

hi people,

i was wondering with which tool i can list all computers on a local network. a lan which is connected to the internet via a local server. when i connect to that lan, i want to have a list of all the computers connected to the lan. not too much details, just pc name and ip if that's possible. just to have an overview who is connected and who is not.

thanks in advance

Think nmap can help you out on that..
nmap -sP <ip+joker> ( nmap -sp 192.168.0.* )
This will map the computers with ip

try out the different versions to see which one works for you. i'm on 2.8 as that's the one that works and none of the samba 3 versions work for me.

if you're using konqueror you can access your workgroup with the url:

or you can use smb4k or linneighborhood as the front end.
