LinuxMint 17.2 how to install Thunderbird 31.8

I would like to install Thunderbird 31.8 in Linux Mint 17.2 but no matter what it keeps installing version 38.3.0. Your suggestions welcomed. I am very new to Linux and am still learning the commands for just about everything.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions!

Why do you want to install an old version of Thunderbird rather than the current verson?

Play Bonny!

What have you tried exactly that it kept instaling the latest version?
Have you tried?
Code:
sudo apt-get install <package-name>=<package-version-number>
Code:
apt-mark hold <package-name>
- this command prevents the packages from being upgraded.

If it doesn't work, you can always try to install it from the source.

be aware that thunderbird might have common dependencies with e.g. firefox, so downgrading thunderbird might not be enough, or not work as expected.
i was thinking that maybe it's also possible to uninstall thunderbird, then install some .deb from their web page. not sure how that would work.

I did use the sudo apt-get install and it continues to obtain the latest release.

I can launch the program from the decompressed file but I cannot install version 31.8.0.

Also tried the procedure here to no avail: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/install...rd-2-in-linux/

Hi Hank...

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure if it will work but you can try downloading the .deb here and installing it that way. Once it downloads, just double click on it to start the installation process. If you need or want additional packages related to Thunderbird, you can find them here.

Let us know how it turns out...

Regards...

I apologize, I didn't test them first.

However, I did find (and test) a .deb for 31.6 here, along with gnome support here. Look under Ubuntu 15.04. If you're Scottish or Irish, there is also a locale package here.

If you absolutely need 31.8 and don't mind doing a little command line work, I found Mozilla's page here. Just choose your system's architecture and your location.

Regards...

There may be alternative ways, how about firing up an imap server and syncing Outlook with it, then syncing Thunderbird.

Thanks to all for you help. After a very round about why I was able to migrate everything over to 31.8.0 and then update to 38.3.0. A lot of time and false starts were necessary to accomplish this task, but it was a great learning experience.
