Software is usually installed in a few places:
/bin - for binaries
/sbin - for system binaries
/usr/bin - user binaries
/usr/sbin - user system binaries
/opt - for optional software like KDE or Gnome
You can get much more detailed information at the Filesystem Hierarchy Standards - http://www.pathname.com/fhs/
This is often confusing but when you have looked at the FHS documentation it slowly starts to make sense.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-Newbie and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

When you install software it usually has defaults when it wants to install itself (in most cases you can change this behaviour). When you install one from RPM package, it goes to /bin or /usr/bin, programs compiled from source usually to /usr/local/bin. The ones have an installer allow you to choose, but usually start with something like /usr/local/programname.
