Linux SuSE not detecting modem...

Hey all. I'm a newbie ( ) to Linux and I need a little help setting up my modem on Linux SuSE 9.2. I've got a Conexant modem on COM3. How do I set it up, and do I need to download any special drivers? I went to Linuxant but they were gonna charge me to get the drivers unless I only want a 14.4k connection, which is just too slow.

Also, I've got a GeForce 6800 GT. What drivers do I need to get to be able to install that on Linux?

Thanks a lot,
Johnny

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

As a general rule of thumb the so-called
WinModems don't do too well under Linux,
some of them have driver-support.

Locate your modem in the output of
lspci -v and then search for it in
http://www.google.com/linux

Cheers,
Tink

I've got a SupraMAX 56i, that I knew, and from what I've read on Diamonds site it's a 100% winmodem with likely no chance of working on Linux. Anyone know of any way of getting it to work at all? If not, I'll just have to wait until I get DSL to use Linux online.

Also, I've got a cheap modem that I'm gonna put in and see what it is to.

Open a terminal, type
lspci -v

What does it say?

Cheers,
Tink

Well, it's very long, and I don't have a way to transfer it to my Windows directory, so I had to write it out, but here's what it says about my modem:

You could try LinuxAnt, see http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ -- it's my understanding, though, that you must pay for LinuxAnt software (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm not wasting my money on another modem when I'm getting DSL here soon. I just want to get my modem working for now. Linux detects my ethernet card, so there's not problem there.

Thanks anyway though guys
