If your DSL modem is connected via Ethernet, there's really nothing to detect: it's not a device of the computer, but of the network. If it's connected via USB, well, then you need to find appropriate drivers. As for your monitor: I've found that monitor detection is rarely an important thing... so long as everything works. (OK, I'll admit, my framebuffer is weird, but that's probably the card)

What are you "trying to configure"? And is your modem connected via USB or Ethernet?

Most likely you'll just need to configure your ethernet card for dhcp. Under suse, I believe this is done through Yast, though I am not sure.
