Linux over Windows

I just ran Linux Mint on Windows from a thumb drive. Linux seemed to know my printer address when I tried to print something and my internet's address. Is this because it got it from Windows? If I download Linux Mint over Windows 10 will Linux know all this or will I have to answer these thing myself?

If I get an answer where will it appear?

If you are running live usb. Be glad all that works. Nothing is used from Windows. You can install with peace of mind.

Usually all errors are induced by new users with windows mind sets.

Hi! Welcome to /r/LinuxQuestions! Good /r/linux4noobs question!

Linux Mint ('distro') is just another OS, like MacOS or M$Win10. You didn't actually run it ON M$Win10: you ran a different OS on your hardware.

It behaves similar to any other OS, just 'better' in some aspects, tho it may not have all the device drivers for uncommon/new hardware.

https://linuxjourney.com is often recommended for beginners. Best wishes! Enjoy!

p.s. Maybe tell us more about your PC, experience, goals, ... You might want to just try Linux in VirtualBox before you install [not 'download'] it over, or dual-boot beside, M$Win10, if you have 8GB ram, to avoid problems. (VM like any other win10 app/game)

Linux got your internet IP the same way Windows did, by DHCP. Your router saw the Mac of the computer and gave it the same IP as it usually does.
The printer was discovered by the printing system probably by picking up a broadcast the printer does on the network, or the printing system probed your local network to look for a printer and found it.

If you install Linux, or use another USB with Linux to boot from, it will probably work the same.

I guess they booted a live USB.

Maybe rephrase that

Maybe:

"I just ran Linux Mint from a thumb drive on a machine that has a hard drive with Windows installed on it."
