Question Linux Definitions

Can someone hook me up to a page that contains linux terms and definitions? As my name suggests I am a total newbie and need to know what lilo and grub are etc.
Thanks

One of my favorite sites when I first started with Linux was the linux documentation project. Their HOWTOs are reasonably good even if somewhat dated.

www.linuxdocs.org/

If you just want to get something working without a thorough understanding of exactly how/why something works, linuxnewbie.org has some good pages

www.linuxnewbie.org

And, of course, sites like this one.

The short answer to your question about LILO/GRUB is, both are boot loaders; most posters in this forum (myself included) prefer GRUB as it is more powerful (not to mention scriptable) than LILO. The acronyms are:
LInux LOader
GRand Unified Boot loader.

You can find more info on LILO in the HOWTOs, and more info on GRUB via the gnu.org site (Look for a link to gnu software.).

Actually, a good intro/reference book might serve you better than a scattering of websites. I'd suggest "Running Linux" by O'Reilly Press.

RE: Linux definitions

I 2 am a newbie to Linux. I installed RH7 last week. Took me 3 tries but I finally made it. I have been searching for a source that would explain Linux terms and app's in a language that a windows user would understand but not much luck.
However..check out http://glossary.linux-support.net/ for a list of defs. Of course, they are still way over my head but at least I got a good laugh out of some of them. Lots are missing..such as the def for RPM. Hang in there. I finally got my mail working and I'm still trying to get my network running. IMHO..there are way too many apps on this thing for a newbie to have to check every one to see what it does.

When I first installed Linux on my PC it took me only one try but for about 5 times I HAD TO install it again and again because every time I deleted somthing or... ! And after about one month I'm still VERY confused there and I visited a lot of sites of documentation but.. it's verry hard to find something suitable!

i think the best documentation is online. usually fairly easy to find. i could probably amaze some of you for some of the questions here i answer i found online by looking and at times, not looking to hard either.. usually right under a persons nose... just a thought.
