Linux .config file what is what??

Hi, everyone...
can anyone please explain me the contents of .config file. while we compile the kernel we do make menu config (or xconfig..etc) and we get a lot of options in the menu. we have to choose them and accordingly a .config file is generated (or previous one updated). but there are so many options that i do not understand all. Can anyone plz suggest me any link or any material so that i can get a little bit expertise in that..(many details are there but i want to understand them all....)....
Thank you
sudhir Kumar

Take a look here for an overview:

Also, Linux Kernel in a Nutshell from O'Reilly Press is excellent and gives detailed explanations for all configuration options:
