linux and ntfs

I do not know if this is right but does linux only do reading of ntfs partitions and not writing to them? is there some legal issue there? like patents?

its just i can read and copy stuff off my winxp ntfs drive but cant save to it from linux.

It's not a legal issue, just that MS don't give out the specifications for NTFS, so the people writing the kernel have to figure it out for themselves. Until they have it 100% nailed, it's regarded as risky to write to NTFS partions/drives but safe to read. Though I think there is support for writing in the 2.6 kernels now.
