Unhappy Library Woes

I am an entousiastic (although frustrated) new linux user.
I have been tring to install new software and I have had a devil of a time.

For sake of ease, I have been using RPMs, but each time I have, I find that I am lacking some library file or another. When I find that file and try to load it, guess what, it needs its own library file that I lack. Finally, I need to load a file that doesn't use RPMs but needs a complier/Make etc.

OK. I don't totally get the compiler thing but I'm getting there. However, when I finally figure out how to run the install file it says I don't have a compiler. Not to be deterred, I check my bin and lib directories and find that I do not have gcc but I do have gcc295 and g++295. I'm no genius (as u may have figured out) but I suspect those are compilers.

Am I doing this all wrong??

Do I just rename those two files? Do I link a new file, gcc, to gcc295? If so, how do I do that.

Thank you in advance and everyone who participates in this invaluable forum.

Try installing the needed packages using gnorpm. You might want to check out apt4rpm and/or Red Carpet for managing software.
