lab question: locate and copy file that defines user accounts.

I'm new to Linux and i have a question about the lab that i'm doing. The question is copy the file which contains all the user accounts on the system to a directory. Any ideas how to locate the user accounts on the system using the command line or other methods? I tried whereis etc/group and it gave me the file but i can't copy that to a sub directory. Please help.

/etc/password lists the user accounts and their home directories.

You have not read/understood the question correctly.

It asks you to locate the file that holds account information and copy *THAT* *FILE*...

Code:
cp /etc/passwd .
This will copy the file to your current location in the file-system (the dot).
