Issue with CONFIG_LOCAL_VERSION_AUTO

Hi,

I have building(with CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y) and installing a new kernel on my ubuntu. I have cloned the tree from Linus's tree using git http link.

But after booting up, when I check the boot messages , the version string does not consist of the git commit id. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
Please help.
If you need more information on the issue, please ask.

git link I have used for clone:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git

command used:
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git

Note: The configuration mentioned in title is wrong. It should have been CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO. I am not sure if I can edit that, but I am really sorry for making such a silly mistake.
