Joystick and USB issue, randomly connects, also caused a mouse issue.

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help anyone gives me!

I'm trying to get Playstation to USB adapter working in Ubuntu 12.04. The adapter is an EMS USB2, and I'm using a Sager NP5160 Laptop.

The problem is it seems like it is random whether the adapter will load when I plug it in. I actually have three different adapters that all have the same issue, but I'm currently focusing on the EMS USB2, as it has the highest success rate (maybe 20%).

Once when it loaded properly (I had a /dev/input/js0), I compared the lsmod to the lsmod with no adapter plugged in, and determined it used the hid_pl module. So I figured I could modprobe hid_pl on an unsuccessful plug-in. However, that did nothing, even when before the modprobe I did a MAKEDEV js, suggested in a HOW-TO I found.

Finally, one time when I plugged the adapter in, not only did it not work, it also made my USB mouse stop working. I had to unplug and plug back in the mouse to make it work again.

I have no idea what's going on. Any suggestions out there?

Bump.

I discovered I have more success plugging the adapters into a different USB port than I've been using previously. Could that mean anything? I have both USB 2.0 and 3.0, though I haven't yet kept track if there is a correlation between connection success and USB type.

Also, I noticed that one of the adapters doesn't cause and new modules to be loaded when it is plugged in and successfully connected. However, I think one of the modules that always seems to be loaded is joydev. Does that mean joydev, or some other module, is being used to interface with that adapter?

If no new module loads after successfully plugging in an adapter, how can I figure out what module is being used with that adapter?
