installing software

I am having problems installing software, most software actually

A problem that is typical is Java Runtime Environment JRE

I can download it ok and unzip it then- how do I run the setup sequence ?

I'm kinda thinking I need to use the terminal program, if that is correct I will need detailed instructions on how to do this.

Kind regards MIck

If you downloaded the file from, then it's not easy to miss the "Instructions" for installation link, which leads to pretty detailed and useful instructions. Maybe you'll find the explanation there:

What distro are you using???

There are basically two methods of software installation on Linux, either via Pre-packaged software packs or by compiling from source. Almost all linux distros use some type of package system which can be used to install pre-packaged software. The source code of the software you want to install is also available and you can go ahead and compile a custom copy exclusively configured for your machine.
