Installed Slack10 - kde doesn't work

Hello,

I installed Slackware 10, everything seamed to work ok. When I boot up (installed lilo in a floppy) linux, it asks for login, I give it, it logs the user in. Then I typed KDM and there's an eror

kdm error while loading shared libraries libx11.so.6 cannot open (...) no such file or dir...

So, what could have gone wrong and what's needed to fix it? Thanks in advance.

did you install all packages (especially from the X series)? it seems some shared library is missing. if you didn't, you can install them by mounting the cdrom (disk 1), go to the slackware/x dir and type "installpkg <packagename>". if you install a package, run "ldconfig" to update the dynamic library links and cache.

greetz,

edit: remember KDM only runs as root...

why not change in the default window manager to kde:
xwmconfig kde

then set the box to log into the graphical mode:
pico /etc/inittab
change the default run level to 4

then check the /etc/rc.d/rc.4 file (i think). and make sure that kdm is the default log in manager. uncomment all the line accept the kdm ones.

this should work like a charm. You migh want to have a look in the slackware forum here as well.

Hello,

I-m now posting from Slack10&Kde. But there was some problem with LILO, when I put the LILO floppy disk to boot, it just shows a bunch of of ---> 99

I had to use the boot disk to get this going, but KDM then worked.

The original problem was, I think, that the first cd I used to install packages was the second, it detected the second drive first, so the packages from the first wich I inserted later, probably got lost. I installed again and that KDM problem is work.

Sorry my keys are messed.

Now a question before I go and try to fix the lilo boot thing.

what should I read in order to do stuff to make this safer.

Thanks.
