The Mouse section in my xorg.conf looks like this:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "Touchpad"
    Driver "mouse"

    Option "Protocol" "Auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
# Wheel mouse...
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "USB Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"

    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
    Option "Protocol" "Auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
# Wheel mouse...
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

EndSection
and at the bottom of the file
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"

    Identifier "Simple Layout"
    Screen "My Screen"

    InputDevice "Touchpad" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "USB Mouse" "SendCoreEvents"
    InputDevice "My Keyboard" "CoreKeyboard"

EndSection
I have a Toshiba laptop, so the touchpad bits may be different for you. But I am running 10.2.

For a USB mouse you have to have USB HID support enabled in the kernel. Slackware doesn't have it enabled by default.
