installation freezes

Hello, I'm trying to install Mandrake 8.2 on a PC :
PII
64 Mo ram
Rage pro turbo AGP (ATI graphical card)
standrad mouse and keyboard

When I try to install Linux from a CD, thecomputer freezes whan the graphical menu for installation appears : I can niether move the mouse nore move through the menu with the keyboards arrows.
When I try to install Linux in text mode, the keyboard arrows work this time and so does the installation, but the computer freezes when KDE launches.

Has anybody got an idea of the problem, and how to solve it ?

Thanks for your help.

64MB it's not enough for KDE, but it should start. Look into your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and look if monitor settings (horizsync etc are correct). Or you may use Xconfigurator to configure X.

Actually, I would recommend AGAINST installing 8.* on P2 boxes.

It works, but it's painfully slow.

7.* would be a good choice. Or Redhat 6.*. A Linux that runs fast and is responsive, is that what you want?

My ATI experience tells me there's a prob with X-Window 4.*. You can choose a lesser resolution or expect freezes or off-center images. X-W 3.3.6 might work better.

I try creating an alternative boot image from the /images/alternatives directory. Try creating an older cdrom boot image like from 2.19
