install avlinux on windows2000 and make dualboot

I've installed avlinux from cd on hard drive with OS win2k,prepared
2 separate partitions (root, and swap-linux) in cost of windows 2000 space.
Grub was installed in this new linux partition(root).
Now I want to have dual boot to windows2000 and avlinux.
I have only standard windows 2000-as it was
How to add option at the start of computer?
I had the option to add changes to mbr windows2000 at the instalation
,but I picked up to boot from separate partition-now I want to link to this inner option

greetings
Les

Cool

Hi.

Good start on the info... are you using a newer CD (ie GNU\Linux.0.0.?) when you installed GRUB it should be the first thing you boot to now? Most of the time you install it to the master boot record that maybe your problem? I would try reinstalling GRUB if that CD makes it easy otherwise http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wizard-...er-grub2-disk/ or a full reinstall of Avlinux with GRUB to the MBR.

Have fun!

here is good answer:)

http://www.aboutdebian.com/dualboot.htm

but i would prefer to have cd and start to:

1.windows 2000
or
2.go to partition with root linux
that would be the safest-I think-am I wrong?

Yes, definitely personal data backups and microcoughed if you don't have a reinstall! The first link in my signature may help some?

I assume the new secure boot UEFI won't be a problem for you but do have enough RAM?

you can use any of the ancient win98 and xp guides to edit the windows "boot.ini"
and the 15 year old xp linux dual boot guides for making a "linuxboot.bin" file using "dd"
and place it on the windows c drive using a 3.5 in mac floppy

that way windows bootloader is used over grub

but ?? win 2000 ??????
just how big is this 16 year old hard drive 20 gig ?
and how much ram is there 64 meg ?

My thought too, audio and video will need some resources. Depending?

thx guys

I f,,a little-grub installed from rescue made wrong entries to boot, then I "repaired" avlinux installation, but it took bad grub parameters and was wrong...now windows didn't start as grub controls situation ok I used Hiren's to boot from HD and it works
starting properly with windows boot loader..data is separated and with new avlinux I don't care about data..It is fun and a little practice for my old mind

old windows98 se I loved it,but forgot a lot... Guys I am using 4 computers 2 of them I assembled myself and 2 are Dells-with modifications .Systems suse 13.2, xp prof, windows 2000 and now I want to check media with this avlinux
ram 1,5GB 200GB and clock 2.0ghz
You suggestions are nice...now is time to understand deeper grub and windows boot tools..

install GRUB to the first linux partition
Microsoft HAS!!!!!! TO!!! HAVE !!!! the mbr !!!!

win 2000 must be on the FIRST drive and on the first partition
-- partitions
1) win2000 boot and C drive ( fat 32 ) -- ntfs was in XP
2) linux boot partition 500 meg ( make bootable with the boot flag !!! )
3) SWAP
4) extended partition
5) /
6) /home

then Chainload the windows boot loader in grub ( partition2 )
-- OR --
use dd to make a 512 bit "Linuxboot.bin" image of grub ( the 15 year old linux XP dual boot guides )
and use a 3.5 in floppy to move it to the windows c drive ( first partition )
and add a entry in the windows "boot.ini" for the "Linuxboot.bin" ( the win98 xp dual boot guides from 2001 )

i've cleaned grub -installed again avlinux with option mbr

i've cleaned grub (repaired) with :
Ubuntu Tools(boot repair) (https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/)
and super grub2.0254.iso (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wizard-...-into-a-media/)
as I messed a little creating fist grub after I've install avlinux with boot on inner partitions (instead to pick up MBR choice) which I have, not touched from Windows 2000 (on Ntfs) 0 disk (HD1).
Then I've installed avlinux and gave option to add to MBR!!
It created nice option to start -it was detected my old XP (with deleted system files on 2 nd HD) HD 2 includes ntfs partition,ext2,swap ....

all tools were super to use in checking ,creating, repairing GRUB.

Thanks guys.
