Thanks for the feedback. I was not aware that everything under that dir was executable. I was under the impression that there were lots of config files and such. Since I am trying to learn everything I can about linux right now I wanted everything to be permissed as intended.

However, as you stated, I didn't mind the reinstall as someone did half of it for me the first time. I like to learn by doing, not watching, ya know?

this will work to change permissions for one particular user in linux

find / -user <username_to_search> -print0 | xargs -0 chown <username_to_grant>

sample:

find / -user 1569 -print0 | xargs -0 chown root
