That's why I suggested doing the dash c first so it would clear it and only show the new lines

That is the output after you plugged in the player? I hope it is not being recognized as a printer?

I had my printer on. Switched off printer, plugged in mp3 and don't see any mention of usb, just stuff relating to my browser.

Have you checked all the player's settings?

GPGAgent has the same or similar model and it connects as a flash drive but I have owned several SandDisk clip players and different models have different firmware and where one was Mass storage device the other was MTP.

Are you using the cable supplied by the manufacturer? There is a report of no recognition with a charging only cable.

No. What should I adjust in settings?

He's suggesting
Quote:
re-formatting the drive to FAT32.
but Sony says:
Quote:
Be sure not to initialize (format) the memory of your Walkman using a computer.
Should I attempt any of these?
Code:
pmount /dev/sdb1 /media/Walkman
pmount /dev/#yourWalkman# /media/Walkman
Not sure how I would do this below:
Quote:
lowering ATTR{max_sectors} value to 64 by following udev rule:
/etc/udev/rules.d/01-sony_walkman.rules
Perhaps mp3 is not being mounted because it doesn't have parameters?
Can we make parameters?
Debian treats MP3 player parameters identical to those it uses for the USB memory sticks?

That is a good point. I just assumed the OP is using the supplied USB cable which I would expect to be a data cable. I just read as well that you need to use Sony's application which would make the device not usable with linux.

If it isn't recognized i.e. in the output of dmesg or lsusb I don't know of anything or parameter that can fix that.

Are the charging cables always the smaller variety? I tried a different cable much longer (still not manufacturer's) and it's mounted. Thanks

You've been directed to the instructions from the manufacture which have steps to adjust on the device. And have been informed of a problem not using the supplied cable...yet seem to ignore both.

You were told to run "sudo dmesg -c" and THEN RUN "dmesg"...you apparently did not. You were advised to run "ls /dev/sd*" BEFORE AND AFTER plugging in the device. Did you???

We're trying to help, but ignoring things and only doing half of them won't get you much help.

It is the wiring of the cable, not the length that is important.

Glad you got it working.
It would be good if you could post the output of 'lsusb' when the player has been plugged and recognised. The internet seems to lack that information.

What distinguishes them?

Code:
lsusb
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 039c:0a51 Sony Corp. WALKMAN
ID 039c:0a51 stands for user ID/group or it that something akin to Walkman being assigned a unique serial number for that device?

USB devices are registered by vendor and device IDs. 039c is the vendor ID and 0a51 the product ID. Although the Walkman is recognized as a mass storage device it isn't listed in the database.

http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids

To show you a real example my SanDisk flash drive is listed.
ID 0781:5591 SanDisk Corp. Ultra Flair

I know of no standard or official identification for charging only USB cables.
