I bought a lubuntu 14.04 CD when my HP Pavillion Windows XP failed. I installed it but it won't boot up.

Hi Robert...
Welcome to the forum
What do you see when you turn on your computer? Does the GRUB screen come up?
You mentioned that your copy of XP failed. What happened exactly? It's possible that this was the result of your hard drive failing but you would need to run a diagnostic test on the drive to be sure.

The Live CD is a read-only filesystem which means anything you install or any changes you make while using it will be lost on reboot. That's expected behavior.
Go to the site below and either install boot repair from the Lubuntu CD and run it or download it and burn it to a CD. Instructions are on the page. When you use it, select the option to Create BootInfo Summary and post the link to the output here.
Hey, I'm a newbie. I don't know what MBR is, and GRUB is just a word I saw when I used trial from the CD. Nothing but a black screen and blinking cursor comes up when I turn it on (except the English choice). Old XP said NT=whatever was missing. I appreciate all the help.
1. Go to the top icon on the left hand side. It will say Search your computer and online sources.
2. In the search box, type in the word 'term' without the apostrophes.
3. You should see something called Terminal. Click on it.
4. When that opens up you will be able to type commands. Type in lsblk and it will list some devices.
5. Copy and paste that output here.

so you have the actual CD (as in, a physical compact disk, not an .iso image)?
and you managed to install lubuntu to your machines hard drive previously (pleasde be aware that booting a live session from the CD is not the same as installing it)?
and now this old(ish) lubuntu install won't start anymore?
if all this is true, yes, you must boot into the live session (what you called trial) and provide us with some information.
actually, it would be even better if you could boot the installed version (so not the cd) into recovery mode.
i believe this is achieved by holding down shift after the initial boot screen (usually says something about the bios version, plus some info about hardware).
this should take you to a very simple text-only menu, headed "grub".
in there you should see "advanced options for lubuntu", enter, then "recovery mode".
can you do that?
Hey, guys, I really do appreciate the help.
I tried both suggestions. Booting from the CD -- the only thing in the upper left corner is an icon saying "Install 14.04" No "search" box below either. I tried all the function keys, but nothing useful came up.
Booting from the CD and pressing down the shift key when the script comes up -- "boot" comes up. I tried several words (then hit "enter" which works to enter it) but just got "kernel not found".
I should mention I added a 100 gig hard drive to the maker-installed 40 gig hard drive. But that was maybe five years ago and everything worked fine. I installed 14.04 on both drives and can't boot up I guess from the 40 gig "first hard drive". The CD erased everything else from both drives though (I did that by mistake.)
The suggestions above didn't work because theyw were for Ubuntu. Lubuntu has a different Desktop and I don't use if so you will have to look through the Menu whcih is usually an icon on the lower left of the Desktop. You may have other icons, mouse over them until you find one labelled terminal or konsole and open it. Type in the command below and post the output here. Lower Case L in the command. This will show any drives/partitions you have.
1. Go to lower left hand corner and click on the menu button.
2. Go to Other on the menu.
3. Then go click on Xterm.
4. When the terminal opens, type in...
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
5. Copy and paste the what is output in a post here.
6. Be sure it is in code tags.
Went to the Menu button, Samurai, but there was no "Other". I tried a "System Preferences" and got an Xterm, so clicked on that then entered "sudo fdisk -1". Lots came up, but I couldn't copy -- didn't work. Eventually found a "GRUB" folder in 12 and 19 partitions and 120 gig selection, but sub-folders didn't offer me anything I could do.
