How to get an ext ip from modem

Hello everyone.

I am running a server behind a dsl modem with dynamic IP. I would like to retrieve the external modem ip and save it on a file and then compare next time it retrieves it if its different from the previous one send me an email with the new IP address so I always know what is the IP address in case I need to access the server from a remote site. Does anyone has an idea on how this can be done? I guess some sort of script should do this but, don't have any idea on how to retrieve the Ip.

There are various sites that will tell you your external ip i.e. http://whatismyip.com
