How to control printer fonts and margins?

In terminal mode, when I direct the output of a simple text file to my printer, the font is too large and the margins need adjustment.

cat textfile | lpr

I've searched the manpages, forums and Google for an answer. No luck.

Please tell me how I can control the default fonts and margins of a printer.

Thank you.

I suspect you'd need to provide more info, like what printer is it ? inkjet or laser

Make, model, connection type etc etc.

I know that my laserjet 4050 can be configured for defaults from the screen/buttons on the device, plus various settings available from either the kde printer manager and directly from cups.

So perhaps you could "flesh out" your problem a little.

regards

John
