How to Choose what application?

I am not completely new to Linux, I have used it in the server world for awhile now but recently made the transition to desktop world, and well I am wondering since like windows there are so many applications for everything you want to do, but is there any good websites out there to give you a run down on them and links to there sites.. Windows world has big names like download.com and stuff what do the Linux desktop users have? Can anyone point me in the right place?
