How long does "emerge system" take?

Hello everyone. I've got a noob question. I'm in the process of installing gentoo (stage 2) on a pentium 2 processor using DSL. I'm at the point where I started "emerge system" last night at 10:00PM and as of 10:00AM this morning it was still running. Is this normal?

I'm at the same step as you are. Did calculating dependencies take forever for you too? I was wondering if it locked or was just taking a long time.

Does calculating dependencies take place right before the emerge? If that's the case then from my very limited experience with Linux, I would say no, it didn't (about 10 minutes). As far as locking up goes, the emerge system is still scrolling along, which to me means it's still loading, right?

Yes I read it takes a long time to do. Somewhere like 24 hours on a pretty fast one. But as long as it's still scrolling it's going fine for you.

About calculating the dependencies thanks for your answer I think something is wrong for me then.
