How is forwarding done?

Hello.

I'm wondering how dns hosting companies do forwarding, port redirection, and masking for domain names?

Any body knows how to do this?

I'm not actually refering on how to do it with iptables. I know that part.

What I mean is:
You know when you register a domain name, for example with godaddy.com, that you are allowed to redirect it to another page.

mydomain.com forward it to myotherdomain.com also you can forward mydomain.com to myotherdomain.com:8080. Also do masking.

How is this done? Is it done with the nameserver record or is there another trick?
