How do you install software?

Hi, I'm on a SuSe 9.2 box. How do you install software into linux? I did install something via the command line... "viewletbuilder2" but it didnt seem to work... I'm wondering how to install stuff by clicking an exe type file that is an installer. Does this exist?

There are no generic installers such as Install Shield used by MS programs. Many distros use package managers to do this job e.g. APT in Debian. Not sure what Suse uses as I have not used it. There is also the generic method used by all distros and that is to download the source files of the program and then compile it against your own libraries and then install it.
if you install via the latter method and the program is not incorporated into the desktop quick start then it can usually be started using the console and doing ./<program_name> or <program_name> --help which will tell you what switches you need.

Suse uses Yast as it's package manager. Look in your menu for Yast and then just run that and search for the package you want. It should be graphical enough for you

suse uses .rpm files you can install them with yast you should be able to right click a .rpm flie and select install with yast. you can find a bunch of stuff built for suse at:

http://packman.links2linux.com

or try a general .rpm search like:

www.rpmseek.com
