I'm not sure about differences in versions of ALSA and RHEL3, but issuing

alsactl store

at the command prompt as root should do the trick.

hello gankoji and others,
alsactl store does nothing for me this is the error i get when i run alsamixer

[root@localhost root]# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

so i have to always manually adjust the sound control every time the i boot the system. Thanks for the anticipated response.

Well, it sounds like your sound drivers aren't properly installed. What sound card/chipset do you have? Do you have the sound card's drivers compiled into the kernel or as modules?
