How do I return to root in my terminal window?

I recently was using my terminal window following suggestions from a search on line. Now, I cannot get my terminal window to return to the status of "root" for me.
Please direct me to the correct answer as I'm sure it has already been asked!
Thanks much,
ehawk37

Hi,

did you start off as root and then "su" to a different user? If so issue the command "logout" or "exit" to return to the root user. If this does not do what you want or is not relevant to your situation, please provide more information about what you have done and what you are trying to achieve. Perhaps provide a link to the instructions that you were following.

I'm not sure what you mean but if you are in a full screen terminal (TTY), you can return to your normal desktop by holding down ctrl-alt-F7. A few more details (what exactly you were trying to do and how did you try to do it) would help us to answer your question.

UPDATE: I was able to solve the "terminal window" problem I mentioned by just opening a new window.

My main difficulty was in restoring sound to my computer. I am a newbe and had been "fooling around" and trying different suggestions that I could find but nothing went anywhere for me.
Then I found this site - https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/ubuntu...espeakers.html - and VERY CAREFULLY followed the directions for my particular version of Ubuntu and "by golly" it worked just fine. I had my sound back in no time!!!
I have a very strong "distaste" for Windoz and am willing to go through a lot of inconvenience to use Linux, which I love!
Thanks very much for the suggestions following my query in the forum. I look forward to using it often!
