Ubuntu 8.04 Terminal - Can you make the terminal window transparent with a wallpaper?

I have finally learned how to customize my terminal window, but I was wondering if it was possible to have it be transparent with a wallpaper simultaneously? I was also wondering if anyone knew how t change the colors and them of my menu other than just black and white. I have a custom menu button, and would like to make the menu itself look a little different. I saw a vid on youtube where someone had custom colors in there menu. Thanks for the help guys.

Can a terminal background be made transparent wrt the desktop wallpaper? Yes. How can it be both transparent and have its own wallpaper seems like a physical impossibility but I'm probably not understanding what you mean.
cheers,
jdk

If you are using Gnome then I guess you can either make your terminal transparent or use the background image. But you can use the custom colors and you can find them in the menus. If you are using KDE then I guess you can do a bit more and make your image transparent as well.

To try and clarigy, I have a wallpaper on my Terminal Window. There is an option to make the window transparent as well, but you can either do one or the other it seems. It seems like I saw on youtube or somewhere where someone had their terminal window transparent with a wallpaper. I was just wondering if there were a way to make my terminal window transparent and also have a wallpaper on it at the same time. Thanks guys! I hope this makes better sense. I want to have a wallpaper on my terminal window, as well as it being transparent at the same time.

Thanks repo. That was the conclusion that I was beginning to draw. If transparent, then you can only see your desktop behind it. I was hoping to have a custom wallpaper on the window, while it being transparent as well. Oh well....it still looks really cool with the wallpaper. Thanks again guys!

using xfce and its own light composite manager I can do this for inactive terminals. Xfce is quite good for this.
So yes, there is the text on top of the term wallpaper and for inactive ones i choose to have them transparent which means on top of desktop wallpaper. Useless but nice
Without dri, thanks SiS for ignoring linux btw
