[SOLVED]HOW DO I get PORTAL onto the GNOME desktop?

I think I must have xwindows, because I just spent 12 hours getting Gnome up and running.
Surely that means I have at least one window manager running, if Gnome qualifies in this context.

Anyway, I had gnome up but no internet, and got that working.
Now I notice that Portal/portage is not on the Applications/SystemTools menu, like it was automatically under VidaLinux1.
I feel stupid, but keep in mind this is my first Stage 1 install, and its a miracle I got this far bumping against walls in the dark.

P.S. If I use fdisk in a console window, I can see my /dev/hda5 partition. (it is part of an extended partition that is tagged /dev/hda3. hda4 is my root.)
The thing is, even though I post it in FSTAB, it doesn't show up, and I desperately want to get the files off it if I can. Any ideas on that as well?
Thanks for your time, hope you can help.

My System: Gentoo Stage 1 install
x86 desktop PC (Celeron)

Gentoo doesn't come with a GUI for portage by default, you will have to run it from the command line, however there are some guis available, you could have a look into Porthole.

try mounting the disc with the command

Code:
mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda5 /mnt/somefolder
where somefolder is a folder you have made in /mnt and reiserfs is replaced by whatever filesystem you are using

Thanks: got into the partition

The instructions you gave for the partition worked well,
and later I was able to update FSTAB to make the files available to Gnome.

Thanks again! I also got Porthole up and running. This wasn't too bad:
I downloaded a 2k textfile called an 'Ebuild'. The Ebuild just tells EMERGE how to install things. Since Porthole is already in the portage tree, all you have to do basically is 'emerge -av porthole':

Porthole is a MASKED package: to emerge (when masked) the exact entry in /etc/portage/package.keywords should be:
Code:
pp-portage/porthole -x86
(for an IBM PC clone).

Because Porthole is not already in portage, I had to add an entry in /etc/make.conf like this:
Code:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"
...and then put the Ebuild file in that folder. Then I just emerged normally:
Code:
emerge -av porthole <enter>
and say 'yes' to the merge question.
Porthole then automatically appears on the Gnome menu in a few minutes.
