host name resolution

Okay I am working on a linux networking lab. There is a question, that I don't understand.

What will be the result of the host name resolution when mulitple IP addresses are associated witht he same host name in the /etc/hosts file?

The question before that is Explain why a static mapping of names and IP addresses is impractical when the number of hosts is large. This would be because of having to edit and delete changes in /etc/hosts. It would take to much time. The static mapping would only be practical in a small network that didn't change very often.

Any help would be appreciated!

We don't answer homework questions, so I present clues
The question is probably about reverse resolution (ip -> hostname). You should test it, but I think it'll resolve in first one found.
Second question: there's something more. Imagine you have 100 machines, every has its own /etc/hosts. How would you keep them up to date?

I understand that. I wasn't asking for an answer. I only come to see if I could get some suggestions.

Sorry,

Melissa

Melissa, asking for suggestions is perfectly OK. I understand you know I had to write about rules to make things clean.
