host name resolution problems

Okay, the linux server can ping it self (ip address, hostname and hostname.domain.com). However my windows computer can only sucessfully ping my linux server's ip address and it's hostname, meaning that the windows computer can only successfully ping hostname and not hostname.domain.com. My guess is that I am not configuring my linux server domain resolution correctly.

just in case here's the configuration of my resolv.conf file
Code:
search hostname.domain.com
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
should it be just
Code:
search domain.com
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Anyone got any suggestions on how I can fix this? Thanks
