hey bruno buys..I need your help with installing a firewall in my SuSe ver 8.2 distro

bruno buys,
First, thank you for helping me with my Linux/Windows dual boot installation.

Now I am trying to install a firewall to help protect my system. I do not know how to do this with SuSe and since you also use SuSe could you please help me to get a firewell installed.

What is a good, easy to understand, and preferably free Firewall??

Where could I get a firewall like this??

How do I install it into a directory where it will be executed at bootup??

I would also like to install an antivirus program. How would I do that with these same questions in mind??

Thank you,

Bobby Howerton

Hi bob!
There is one already installed on suse 8.2. Open yast2, and go to "Security and users" section. This yast2 module configures iptables, quite a standard (and good) linux app, which do several things including firewall.
This setup is very self-explanatory, but feel free to post again, if you wish.

is there a way that you can tell if it is working properly??

I need to install an antivirus. are there antivirus programs available for SuSe Linux??

Can you help me get started in getting an antivirus program and getting it installed??

Well, you can check the status of the daemon at the console:

rcSuSEfirewall2 status

notice the correct caps, this is kinda annoying....

Did you close all the ports you don't use, at yast2? Its a good practice.

But to really run a detection thing, you have to ask someone to hack you (are you sure you wanna do this?). If it is running it should be ok....

Is your box routing internet for a win machine? I guess the guys at clam antivirus have written things for linux: http://www.clamav.net/

Hmm... this time I won't be useful, my friend... Never did this before. But read the docs and readmes, it shouldn't be difficult.
